GM EVs Gain Access To Tesla Superchargers With $225 Adapter

Starting today, General Motors (GM) electric vehicles (EVs) officially gain access to Tesla’s vast Supercharger network, marking a significant expansion of charging options for GM customers. This development follows a deal announced in June 2023, in which GM secured access to Tesla’s more than 17,000 DC fast chargers across North America.

The move is part of GM’s broader strategy to improve the EV ownership experience and expand charging infrastructure, a critical element in accelerating the shift to electric vehicles. The agreement mirrors a similar partnership struck between Tesla and Ford earlier in the year.

For GM customers, this means greater convenience, as Tesla’s Supercharger network is one of the most extensive and reliable fast-charging infrastructures available. GM’s EV lineup, which includes popular models like the Chevrolet Bolt and newer Ultium-based vehicles from Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC, will now be able to tap into this charging resource. However, since GM’s EVs use the CCS1 charging standard, an adapter will be required to connect to Tesla’s J3400 (formerly NACS) plug.

The adapter is priced at $225 and will be available for purchase via GM’s smartphone app (more info and download links here). Customers will also use the app to locate nearby Superchargers and manage payment for their charging sessions.

The introduction of the adapter comes with some differences compared to Tesla’s arrangement with Ford. Ford offered the adapter free of charge to early registrants, while GM customers will need to purchase theirs. Despite this, the access to Tesla’s network is a substantial improvement in charging flexibility, especially for GM drivers who have been limited to a less extensive network of fast chargers.

Looking ahead, GM has confirmed that starting in 2024, it will manufacture its EVs with native J3400 ports, eliminating the need for an adapter altogether. This shift is part of GM’s larger effort to streamline the charging process for its electric vehicles and make the transition to EVs as seamless as possible.

By integrating Tesla’s charging standard directly into its future models, GM is positioning itself to better compete in the evolving electric vehicle market, where charging infrastructure is a key factor in customer satisfaction and adoption.
